January Happenings

This year for New Year's Eve we decided to lay low and spend it with each other. Nobody likes dealing with an overtired Karlee and I wasn't likely going to make it until midnight before crashing anyway. So we broke out our new fire pit that we got for Christmas and roasted some Costco hot dogs and made s'mores. Karlee was fascinated by the fire...from a distance. Only thing I hate about doing fires is the smell just seems to linger on you for a long time. Oh well!

Karlee also loves to turn on her fish lamp that she got for Christmas and just sit and stare at the fishes. When she was in daycare in Utah, my dad would be the one who would pick her up every day and I guess she made him look at the fish tank with her every day so he got her this fish lamp.
Karlee also likes to scare her mom to death by scaling the outside of our stair case.
We also made some time to go to the zoo while Penn had some time off work. We went with my brother and his family and it was beautiful 70 degree weather. Not used to that in January.

Penn also got some good snuggling time in with his girls while he was off work.
We also took our first road trip since moving here. Penn's brother Alex was invited to try out for the Tops in Blue for the Air Force (it's a performing group that tours the Air Force Bases and performs) and the try out was to be at Lackland AFB in San Antonio. Since he is currently stationed in California, we thought it would be a good opportunity to go see him since it's only a 4.5 hour drive. Lucky for us, he was selected to join the group as the lead keyboard player and will be back at Lackland for a couple of months before they start touring.

We didn't get to do a lot of touristy things while there because we were kind of at the mercy of Alex's schedule and with the military, it's never predictable. We figured we go visit again and make more time to do some of the fun things like the Riverwalk, the Alamo, and Sea World. It was fun to see him and Karlee just loves her Uncle Alex.

We did make a drive up to see the San Antonio temple one morning. The grounds were closed since it was Sunday, but it was still neat to be able to see it. With Texas being so flat, I was amazed that this temple is actually on a hillside.
Karlee got to enjoy her first Dilly Bar while we were there too.

Penn had to take Friday off on the 20th to watch Karlee. They had lots of fun going to Lowe's (Karlee's favorite stores are Lowe's and Home Depot because they have race car shopping carts...go figure) and having a picnic on the patio since the weather was beautiful that day. It was so helpful to have Penn around to watch after Karlee that weekend that's for sure.

This last week we embarked on the journey to getting Karlee Potty Trained! She did so good! Only setback we've had is that she is super sick right now and doesn't seem to care about anything (eating, drinking, using the potty). Her first day she had 2 accidents and 1 success (we started half way through the day). Second day was 1 accident and 4 successes. Third day was 6 successes and 1 accident while we were at my brother's house. We're so proud of her! She really is a big girl now!

That's about it for our month!

Yay for potty-training! Good luck on continued success.

And I love fire-pits. We have one in our yard and it's one of my favorite things to do on a summer's night...as long as I don't have to go anywhere for a few days after. I totally understand the smokey-hair issue for days afterward.
